    Default I got skunked today

I went to Old Town and got there at 6am. I saw a sign at some bank down there that said 18 degrees, I don't buy that but it was cold. I motored wide open with tears streaming out of my eyes and was thinking I'm so blessed to be doing this. I got to my spot and wiped the almost frozing water from my face put on a black and chartreuse Slater jig on and the second time I jiggled it..bam..1.5 pound crappie.. I was really thinking I'm blessed. Needless to say I left the lake some hours later with my one fish...:o Nobody I talked to was catching anything. I guess that cold front ruined it for me and everyone I had talked to.

I did get to meet Gut Shot on the lake. He and his dad were setting out yoyo's. We made small talk and I let them to there fishing. He was a real nice person. Before I left, I went back to his honey hole to see how they were doing but, they had already left or moved to another spot.

All in all, I'm am blessed the sun was shining, the wind was low, I did not drown, and I made it home safely. Hopefully, I'll live to do this again next weekend.

    Default jig color

I see you use feather jigs. I only use tubes and purple & white if the water is clear. Blue & yellow if stained use to work for me at OLd Town This early in the year, I always went North past most people. The water seemed to be a little clearer and warmer from the farmers draining off their fields.

Ahhh...I hate it when I begin a day in that fashion. A big ol' slab to get you all excited...then you sit there just anxious for the rest of the day. It's almost like I go through the 5 steps of grieving when that happens.

Denial...there gonna pick up here in just a minute.

Anger...I've done drove all this way, and your gonna come on and hit that dayum jig you fat cow!

Bargaining...Come on, please, I promise that I'll release you.

Depression...Oh god, what am I going to do if I don't catch another fish today.

Acceptance...Well, they kicked my arse today, but I'm gonna go back and give 'em hel! next weekend...

    Talking

It could have been worse Rusty. I got skunked both Saturday and Sunday. It was a pleasure to meet you Sunday. We tried everything and everything we did seemed wrong. I missed ac ouple and 1 broke off Sunday but that was it. My brother, father, and I went to the far south end of the lake about an hour after you and I talked. I only caught 1 channel cat on the yoyo's in about an hour so Itook them up and went south. The water was 2 degrees higher down there for some reason. My brother caught a couple of good ones there in about 18" deep in 3 feet of clear water next to isolated stobs. Looks like the weather should be fairly warm during the week. I may try Old Town again this weekend if this holds up. I left the lake around 3 and headed back to Huntsville, AL. That 6 hour drive seemed awfully long without a fish in the cooler but knowing how much fun Old Town is to fish when it is hot will make me forget this weekend in no time. The front just kille dthe fishing on that shallow water lake for a few days plain and simple.
