Hey, fatcrappie. Glad your roaming around the AR board now. There's lots of good info on some southeast arkansas lakes. I would like to fish the tournament, but my partner won't sit on a 5 gallon bucket...:rolleyes:

Oh yeah, I'm not too sure on how long the xmas trees will take to produce. I remember reading that they don't produce as quick as other cover, but not sure how long. If you know anyone that has some old fields. See if they have any Persimmion trees you can cut. We use them as fish go to them quickly and hang ups are fewer. The ones we use are 10' to 15' tall and we bundle several together. Tie the ends with wire and a weight in the middle. That way the ends don't float up to the surface giving location away. If they're green it does'nt take much weight to sink. Slabs need room to swim in the brushpiles. Whatever you use don't space too close as 8'' or more spacing between limbs works best. Cedar is too thick and here it tends to completely moss over. Some say they burn off the needles first.
Oak works but seems to go through a sour and is best following year.:D
Bamboo is good but ranks second behind the Persimmon tops for slabs in my book. Also bamboo takes alot of weight to sink.
For sinking the Persimmon tree tops .We use old used house wiring for ties. These can be taken apart as most have 3 wires. The plastic covered copper wire will not rust or rot. For weights ,look around old buildings being torn down and get old used concrete blocks. Only costs is gas and time to collect these for us.:D

I've read about bamboo,not persimmion trees wouldn't know where to get thoses . Used to hunt around them deer loveum. On the boo you talk about weight, how much. I see plenty of cane, next door neighbor has a yard full, could go on a night hunt. na thanks. Maybe get out that way one day

When we build the condos (stand up ones in a 5-gallon bucket) we use about 60lbs. of quickcrete. With the flat mat style we use 2 heavyweight 8x8x16 concrete blocks. We've never had any trouble sinking the buckets, but sometimes have to pull a few stalks of boo out of the blocks or add a few bags of rocks.
