    Default Cane Creek/L. Monticello this weekend


    I figured that I wouldn't have another chance for a while, so I decided to hit CC on yesterday morning. I had high hopes before the front moved through. Cloudy skies, light sprinkle, little ripple...But, apparently the crappie didn't appreciate it too much. Put poles in the water at the crack of dawn and hadn't gotten a single bite by 11:00, so I said screw this. I only saw 2 other boats out there and they were both bassin', so I figured that the bite was completely off.

    Packed it up. Headed in to get some dinner. Then rolled on over to Lake Monticello. It rained hard the whole way over there, and then it rained, and rained, and rained...Lots of folks were headin' in as I was getting there around 12:30. All the boats had between 5-10 crappie, so I knew that it was going to be slow.

    I really wasn't prepared to fish 55' deep. Started off with 6 poles and figured out really quick that they couldn't be spread far enough apart to keep the baits separated at 50' deep, so I had to downsize to 4 poles. They would hit it pretty good, but after a few cranks of the reel, it felt like they had gotten off the hook. After about an hour of reeling, they would just come up and lay on their side. Without a doubt, it was the wildest crappie fishing that I've ever done. I hooked several, but didn't get them to the top. Ended up with 7 crappie and a white bass. I threw a couple of small white bass back, and they seemed to take the pressure fairly well. All were caught on rosies dead on the bottom between 45-53' deep. I did catch my biggest blacknose to date. He weighed 1-12oz.

    Thanks for the kind words, Ray. It's a good thing that numbers don't decide a successful day! I try to take lots of pics on and off the lake to keep up with Fishin' Magician. Although, it will take a long time to get to his level of storybook posts...

    CEB way to go. Now that duck season (the worst I ever had) is over maybe I can get back to fishin. (not that I catch many) I always enjoy being out.

    Keep the pics coming, I enjoy seeing what you can do.

    With this cold snap, the ducks will probably be flying now that duck season is over. Hopefully though, we can make your spring crappie season a knockout. Hope to see you on the water more now (without shotgun in hand).

    Some nice fish Chris, glad you caught some at LM. All I could catch Friday were white bass.

    Great post Chris. Funny you mention fishin magician. when i started reading your post and looking at the pictures it reminded me of his posts, you bout got it man, only thing i saw was the signature sunset pic was missing....lol..But I like the sunrise pic. Glad you got out on the water and made a decent day out of what you had to work with... Keep the post coming. Oh and tell Dale im still waiting to see them rack bucks he was telling me about............Johnny

    Hey Jerry, I didn't have a single hit on my multi-jig poles. All of them hit rosies and only on the bottom hook. On my next trip to L. Monticello, I'll be much more prepared and hopefully do even better...

    :D I usually get a sunrise pic instead of a sunset pic. I think that on average I usually get on the water before FM. Oh well, I couldn't have gotten a sunset pic on Saturday if I had wanted to. I didn't see the sun again after that first sunrise pic...:D Oh, and I have a long ways to go before I reach FM's level of posts...

    Dale is currently out of the country in Mexico. The ol' bum is livin' it up down there for a few days. Not sure when he's gonna be back?
