It's not overkill with some of the bigger heavier units mounted to them, they don't flop down when motoring or when your in rough water like the smaller diameter ones do , for the smaller units though I can see where the mounting plate would be excessive and in the wayOriginally Posted by blueducklane

Best mount on the market. Sturdy, but easy to position. Had another brand in my blue demo boat that was really nice, but hard to reposition.

I also have an adapter that holds the gps i hunt with that works with the big ball. Easy conversion. i mounted my transducer to a polyethelyne plate so alls i have to do is unscrew and remove.
