Sometimes I'll just take a short spinning rod and reel and let a jig hang over the side of the boat at about half the depth that I think they should be at. I really don't even pay much attention to it, but if I start picking up a fish or two with it and I'm not doing that well at the depth I thought they should be at then I shallow up, and drop the spinning rod deeper and see what happens. And sometimes if I'm fishing say 12' deep I'll pitch my jig, usually about a 1/32oz head, out as far as I can and let it slowly fall toward the bottom. If I get a hit or two while it's falling I try to estimate how deep the jig was when it got hit, then I know they are shallower than I thought and adjust accordingly. And sometimes if I'm fishing deeper and I go to move the boat to another spot I'll let my jig drag behind me if I get a hit when my line is at say a 45 degree angle I know they are probably about half as deep as I thought.
