Yea, that was a very long time ago. It was kind of scary as a kid fishing with gar bigger than I was swimming around me. That was the first time I ever saw a gar much less being around them. I also remember seeing a guy cleaning one to eat, he had a towel around his snout beating him against a tree at the camp area. To this day I don't know why. But I remember eating some of it that night and it was pretty white meat and pretty good. Wow, memories.
Gar are really fine eating . They are tough to fillet before beating to loosen the hard shell then using hatchet or tin snips to open them up.
