I am always telling folks that Crappie have a big mouth for a reason. It is a predator and will eat whatever fits it's mouth. Most times there is no reason to use tiny baits. Look what this Crappie had in it's belly next to the big Southern Pro Umbrella tube. That Shad was over 4'' long !

Oh man...throw that on a jig head, put a nibble on it and catch another!!! Gotta save those pennies these days!! lolSeriously though it is amazing what you find in their stomachs! One of my boys was fishing for bass with a fairly large crankbait and caught a 10" crappie. Talk about predator! Although the crappies sacrifice is what prompted my oldest to put down the bass rod and grab on of my 11' jigging poles...now his Christmas list includes a long list from The Grizzly Jigs Catalog!
"But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 25:15
And this my furry friends is why you have a wintertime bite. The shad that they have been eating all summer finally get too big to swallow so the crappie quit chasing and start eating what ever is dropped in front of them that is bite size.
Good pics. Good thing that wasn't a crappie inside. You would have been one over.

I remember catching Crappies that are full of shad, and they'd spit out the shad when hooked. But when I use shads I netted to fish for crappie, I just could not get a bite. Must be my setup and presentation. Any ideas?
