Electro fishing

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Matt Schroeder and Matt Horton from the AG&F District 10 last night on lake Conway electro fishing. Matt and Matt are some really busy guys, they are having to deal with all this oil spill and still perform their seasonal studies and sampling. Without a doubt I can say they sure seem to have their ducks in a row. Electro fishing has to be done during a small window of opportunity. I got to experience electro fishing first hand, and it is a lot of fun. We had a really nice night as far as the weather goes for the task that was at hand. I can say that electro fishing is not species specific, if a fish gets inside of that electrical field generated by the equipment it is going to be rendered temporarily immobile. We saw all different species of fish, we saw gar, drum, bluegill, redear, yellow bass, crappie, suckers, and largemouth bass. Largemouth bass was the target species last night. We saw a lot of bass, they ranged in sizes from fingerling size up to nearly 6 pounds. I encourage everyone who can and is able to contact your biologist in your district and volunteer to help them, if the other districts are anything like district ten and I am sure they are, they have a lot of irons in the fire and would welcome your help and assistants. . A few years ago I was allowed the opportunity to help district ten with some trap netting and also some rotenone sampling, and by far I can say the electro fishing is the most fun. Matt and Matt thanks for the opportunity to experience electro fishing and to see some of the forms of data that has to be collected
