Well gentleman, there are about 3 reasons they were so shallow:

1. Lake Conway is a shallow lake, which in result has no thermocline so the shallow water is the same temp as the deeper water for the most part..
2. It was sunny yesterday so the water warmed a little bit around the shallows. When I started fishing yesterday the water temp was about 47 degrees. When I left the shallow water had warmed to about 52 degrees.
3. Crappie like to eat, and the shad go shallow looking for the warmer water, shad start to die of as the water temp gets into the lower 40s. So in turn the shad go shallow for warmer water and the crappie follow them looking for a buffet of shad.
