Well I'm sinking in deeper water cause it's a deeper lake. I can relate to the shallower lakes and the need for shallower brush. If I'd sank in that depth of water this next summer most would be showing the way our Summers have been here lately. Some of mine will still show if it drops say 8'+ but most won't ever show. I like that 18-25 or even 30 fow depth. Now I did sink some for Spring fishing that are say 5'-10 or 12' range. I like hanging them tops in the top of tops already out there with the rock in the top, butt up and tied to standing timber/tops in the lake but that's not as easy to do by yourself and usually means loading them in the boat creating a mess. As for the part about getting hung in the string I don't tie in the very top due to that and it floating up in shallow water conditions where others can find it. I tie it about 3 or 4' from the top. I had thought about that already having had fish wrap me up like that before. Another thing that helps is when you lift after the fish takes it, lift up and out toward open water.
