Yea, she was pretty Bug-Eyed when I got her up. I hung one that felt much bigger than this but she got off before I could get her to the top. I was using a 1/32 oz white roadrunner with a Bobby Garland Bleeding Shad.......used 1/2 oz weight a foot above the RR. Just find the fish then concentrate on keeping your lines vertical while staying above them.....can be tricky in a lot of wind with 6-8 rods that deep, LOL. FYI, the Crappie are getting harder and harder to find in Lake Monticello, which used to be an outstanding wintertime Crappie lake. Could get a limit in an hour 3-4 years ago but I only got 2 fish in the boat this morning. I heard a rumor that grass carp had been put into the lake recently and that there is no longer any grass on the bottom. We have used fish finders as well as an underwater camera for years to find Crappie in crystal clear Lake Monticello but now have a really hard time finding any.....the population really seems to be less than a tenth of what it was several years ago.....

My guess is the FL bass ate them too. Now where did you find that deep of water in Monticello?? Last time my and a friend was down there bassin in the Spring the deepest water I thought we'd found was on the old fence line, standing tree top timber that goes in a straight line across the lake and seems like that was only around 30ish?? We found our bass that day in somebody's front yard, literally! If you know the lake you'll know where I'm talking about, their well house was a fish magnet also, or what looked to be the well house.
As for fish numbers I also didn't remember seeing any crappie stocked in Monticello off the stocking reports I got the other day. From what everyone said that lake has some Hugh bass in it though and I'd say that's where the crappie went. We had a few 3-4LB fish that day but it was post spawn already

I've caught them as deep as 45 FOW in Ouachita. When those water temps get real cold they for sure will go deep. I love catching them deep like that vertical jigging, and when it's good it can be awesome fishing. Nice photo.

I used to fish lake Monticello back when I lived in fountain hill. I think if you put in at hunger run boat ramp the deep water is just south of the ramp. I remember it being 60 fow right there off the West Bank about 150 yards or so from ramp. In January I kid you not there would be 50-60 boats stacked in there me included. This was 8 years ago last time I fished it.

I tried that area you are talking about just out from the ramp but never saw a fish. Caught these about halfway to the spillway pipe and about 250 yds off the West bank on the flats. The Crappie were real scattered and couldn't find more than 3-4 together at one time on the Humminbird. 3-4 years ago they would be stacked up and the fish alarm would go so crazy I would have to turn it off. I'm hoping as the water gets colder they will congregate better so we can start getting decent limits. From what I have been told, Lake Monticello is not the Bass lake it once was either! I also noticed that LM was not included in the stocking reports the other day.

Sounds like its been fished out. Might need to give it a break for awhile unless you just gotta be the guy that catches the last one there. ;-)

    Go eagle hunting instead.

Great catch steve. I talked with a fisheries biologist and was told that they dont typically stock crappie once they have been stocked as they take care of themselves. I dont know how valid that statement is but thats what i was told.
