HAHA!!! I remember last year me and brother were spider rigging Dardanelle. We had the wind at our back for a bit to get into position... to make a against the wind run and wham all eight poles got hung in a big top...with the wind pounding us right into the brush and bending our rods to the breaking point. What a mess. We had to retie all eight poles. Sometimes you just haft to cut your losses and start breaking off or pulling it out before your rods break. LOL.

Not expert my eye! I wish i had read this article 6yrs. ago when i started this adventure. It would have saved me a lot of time and money! great read Meatgetter. All I could add is you have to learn to fish the things you cant see instead of the things you can. The colder it is the slower you go and the hotter it is the faster you go. Most of all GET YOU SOME SHADE!

    Nice read Jerry.

I might add that one of the hardest things to learn is boat control in windy or rough conditions. Fun fishing allows you to pick the days you go, but tourney fishing you have to go no matter the weather conditions. You can have the very best equipment that money can buy, but if you don't practice fishing the wind, and learn how to control your boat, your success will suffer. It is a MUST to learn boat control. You should be able to fish cover in a strong wind by coming in down wind of it, and you should invest in chains and drift socks to control the boat on open water where you can travel with the wind at the correct speed. It's fairly easy to learn spider rigging, especially if you have an experienced person that can take and show you, but the biggest key is for YOU to control the boat with the Trolling Motor instead of just going fishing with someone. Boat control for me is THE most important factor in spider rigging, as well as ANY other style of fishing. The ability to keep yourself in the right spot is a must, and that is the hardest thing to learn. Time on the water and practicing is the ONLY way to learn it. Again, YOU must run the TM, not your spider rigging instructor to learn this!!!!!!

Well said! Few things are more challenging than catching crappie spider rigging in the wind. I'm always amazed that the crappie seem to bite good most of the time on windy days (if you can control the boat).
