The best? That's a Chevy vs Ford argument. I have a 998 and a 596 hummingbird. But you definitely don't need to spend that much to have a good fish finder but down image at least and side image are hard to do without after you have them and they come in handy. You can go over to member classified ads and brian@bbgmarine has the 998 hummingbirds on close out. That's where I got mine. They are new units hummingbird is just updating them so the old models are on clearance.

I bought a 898c SI Humminbird liked it so much I just bought a 1198c SI. I plan to move the 898 to the bow with the 1198c SI at the dash. I have a 360 degree ordered if Humminbird ever gets the bugs worked out of it. I went with Humminbird because it is supposed to be more user friendly and I am computer challenged. I have not tried Lowrance I am sure they are great finders. The only advice I would give is buy as big of screen as your budget will allow.

Every body seems to be using the birds. I don't have the extra $ for an expensive bird but have a cheapo. I find brush the ol fashion way, but dropping down to it. As for showing fish mine works fine where there's fish. Fishing with some of my buddies who have fancy finders (birds) they seem like the best bet. I've kicked it around to get a good one but they sure ain't cheap.
