    Default Back Home!

Well I moved my family from central VA back to my hometown of Jonesboro. I haven't started my new job yet and have the great opportunity to go fishing w my 82 yo grandpa tomorrow. Would love some recommendations on a good place within an hour of Jonesboro. I was thinking Monterey or Portia or Shirey Bay but I'm worried about water levels. Any input would be much appreciated guys.

i doubt you could get a boat in portia. water is probably below either boat ramp. it's almost dry.

Dang that stinks. What about the launch into black river over near Shirey? Does anybody know about Monterey launch?

Since all our spots are too low to launch what is my best chance at fishable water and some vertical jigging within an hours drive of Jonesboro?

Well, our plan is to head toward Lake Charles and we are just going to look at Portia and Shirey on the way. If they are too low to launch or fish, we will head on to Lake Charles for some monster 6 inchers

i don't really care, I just am so glad to be back and spending the day with my grandpa.

Wanted to report on Shirey Bay guys.

Water was of course very low, but my small boat launched without any issues. Deepest water fished was 6 ft. All crappie were caught in at least 4 fow on cypress with other debris around. Cypress also had to be out from the bank in 4 fow or higher. Surprisingly all fish were caught 2 ft deep or less though; I think I fished too deep most of the morning thinking the fish would be on the bottom. Had to put the jig right next to the tree and jig it for 10-15 seconds and then just hold it as still as I could; that is when I would get the hit. The crappie that did strike hit hard. I caught 12 crappie in all with only 2 keeper size; one of the 2 was fairly decent

Used standard tube jigs and only tried 2 colors: Black and White (did best) and Cart.,Black,Red tri-color.

I fished from 7-10:30 and had the whole place to myself. It was a great morning to be out on the water.

that last picture ruined it. you should have gone by and looked at portia bay and taken a picture of it. i think you would have been shocked.
