Never ate gar, but I think the limit on alligator gar like JW has is 2. Had some grinnel fillets and they taste really ______ and put up a terrific fight. Yes gar eggs are poison. I know a fellow whos family ate some and they all ended up in the hospital.

About a month ago I was down in Gulf Shores Alabama. Me and a local guy were fishing on a boat slip in what they call Little Lagoon. It was about 1 a.m. and we had flood lights on so we could attract speckled trout. I was sitting in my chair when I seen something swimming in front of the slip. I turned my head lamp on and to my amazment it was a spotted gar about 3 feet long. I told my buddy that there was a dang gar in front of me. He said there are no gar around here. I said well there is now!!!! I asked him if there were any fresh water rivers feeding the lagoon and he told me no. I looked on google maps and confirmed it. What a gar is doing in salt water I have no idea but seeing the picture of a alligator gar along with redfish kinda getting me to thinking it is not as rare as I thought.

Arkansasbowhunter, If you dont mind me asking what were you catching those reds on. I went down to Gulf Shores at the end of June and caught a bunch on sand fleas that I caught in the surf. Went back down there again around the end of July and didnt have the luck like I did before. Caught a few on live shrimp. But I did catch the biggest speckled trout I ever caught. It was 24" long. What a fight it put on. I guess what I am asking is if you were using artifical lure and what type. The guys at Mo's Bait Shop in Orange Beach are really big into Gulp baits. They tell me thats what they use alot.

I hear Ol' Glenn is looking for a new partner. You're gonna have to grow a better beard (and loose the shoes) first. Them some awesome fish, I'd love to tackle one someday. Don't know that I've even seen an alligator gar.

There are a few in the Arkansas River. Back years ago the White River was suppose to be the place to catch them. Getting rare in Arkansas.
