Thread: The rules of crankbaiting.

Rule number 2. Never, and I mean NEVER mentioning dragging or pushing cranks around someone who does not fish, especially if they know your wife. They often think you are refering to shopping with your spouse and trying to get her out of a store. These misunderstandings upon getting back to your spouse can be disasterous to your love life.

I'm not sure, but I think this may be some kind of law governing all who run cranks.

Rule number 3. Obviously, the crankbait manufacturers are in cahoots with the medical professionals. Why else would they put TWO sets of razor sharp trebble hooks on a crankbait when 1 set is more than plenty to catch any fish stupid enough to bite such a monstrosity. The second set is obviously for one of two things, either to hang up on some underwater structure and cause you to lose your rig (see rule #1), or number two, to increase the trips to the emergency room from that second set of hooks winding up in the hands, or other appendages of the non-suspecting fisherman.

Rule number 4. The size and type fish hooked are inversly proportional to the size line and the backbone of the cranking rod used. For example, the six inch crappie will be caught on the Magnum, extra stiff,crappie rod with the backbone of a stainless steel I beam, equipped with 40lb test and the reel, surplus off a blue marlin fishing boat, while the catfish the size of jaws, and if drug tested would show signs of steriod use, will be hooked on the fly weight rod equipped with angel hair line that you were using (but not expecting to catch anything on) just to have another bait in the water.

Rule number 5 (triggered by Creekslicks post) When you find a color that they really like, buy at least 6, but NEVER accumulate any more than 6 of the same color. Once a person reaches the number 7 of any one color, the fish will refuse to ever bite that color again.

Rule number 6. The odds of getting hung up are in direct propertion to the cost of the crankbait. A person who crankbaits lake Conway and has purchased 2 for a dollar crankbaits out of the bargain bin can pull right down the middle of lake Conway from the 89 bridge to Crappie Pro's house without nary a hangup, while the fisherman in the middle of Norfork with his brand new $40 ultimate irrestible crappie dennimite crank will be hung before pulling 40 yards.

All of these are sensible rules and should be followed unless they conflict. When conflict is encountered go with the rule that gets you the most crankbaits.

Now I have a question, who buys those $12 and $16 crankbaits that look like the $3.99 and $4.99 crankbaits.....and why? I suspect the answer to the first part is Green Carp fishermen with too much money. Someone must be buying them because Gander and Academy stock more of the ridiculously expensive cranks than the more reasonable versions.
Another question now that I'm on a roll. Why do the stores stock the cranks that run on top to 4 ft. where I can see them but stock the ones that run mid-depth where I have to bend over to inspect them? Just wondering.

Possum, I see by your first sentence that you have grasped the concept for crankbait fishing. I am, however, glad you asked the 2 questions below your statement. I will, to the best of my ability, answer those 2 questions.

Many crankbait fishers are out of shape physically. The stores stock the most desired crankbaits on the bottom knowing that when the out of shape fisherman bends over, it will cut off oxygen to his brain causing him to not think clearly. This often results in the fisherman picking up many more crankbaits than he actually needs. That is why you often find, in these big stores, crankbaits incorrectly placed back on the wrong racks after the fishermans wife shows up and asks him why he has so many crank baits in hand and he says "I didn't realize I had that many I'll put some back". This is obviously why BRM has lost 80lbs. He apparently desired to reach the bottom rack of good crankbaits, snag exactly what he needed without losing air and suffering from over buyage. This is why an experienced crankbait fisher will always "think" about trying to get in better physical shape.

You have basically answered the question yourself, but I will attempt to elaborate. First, most bass fishermen are rich and will buy a tray of 12 and 16 dollar cranks to tie on while heading back to the weigh in to weigh the winning fish that they caught on a 50 cent plastic worm. No sane person will ever put a crankbait like that into the water. Crappie fishermen are different. They are often caught with these in their shopping cart at Bass Pro or Cabelas after misreading the sale tag and incorrectly thinking they are price at $1.29 or $1.69. These expensive cranks often end up in the restock basket near the check out counter when the checker rings up the correct price $16.99 and the crappie fisherman exclaims "HEY I'm gonna fish with it not frame it. Ain't no way I'm throwing something that expensive in the water."
