Thread: Slow was the way to go

Back to nimrod today and slow trolling was the way they wanted it, started off trolling as we have done the past weekends but the fish just didn't seem to want to bite at a very fast pace,after the first three hours finally figured em out, ended up with 2 limits by 11:00 just in time to beat the heat! Caught in 10-15 fow 8-10 ft deep

Yeah, I'll say WOW! Imagine what they'd done if you had threaded an ice cube on the hook and dropped that down to them???

Oh I know you can catch em that way. Over in OK that's the only way we fish during the Winter and Spring....well when spawn hits you can just throw jigs up and down the banks till you find em and really as they start coming up you can catch more just casting out over them and slow retrieve than trolling. They have far more crappie though than do these Hot Springs lakes or even Dequeen, Gilliam, Greeson, lakes. More than one way to skin a cat, I know you know that. I love to tie on 2 jigs about 3' apart and long line for em in 14-20' of water with the long poles myself but that technique don't work everywhere. I've spent years trying to find them on Gilliam, Dequeen lakes and it's usually in the same spots, not very many, and not all year around but good size and enough to make a mess when you do seem to find them, not nearly as fun as that OK bite has been or we wouldn't be driving all that way to fish. I just wish it was better in the Hot Springs area.

Just because your trawling doesn't mean it easy, there's more to it than just blind dragging and learning how to fish using different techniques just makes you a well rounded fisherman and able to adapt to different conditions throughout the year, fishing different lakes will help to Nimrod lol! I bet I've fished more lakes over the years than most. With high gas prices I stay close on Nimrod and Dardanelle most of the time. Unless your wealthy , I can't see anyone driving far fishing as many days as I do. It takes more skill jigging over spider rigging IMO. I catch limits of fish jigging but don't feel the need to go back to spider rigging. I give away most of my catch anyway.

If I lived on lake nimrod I would put structure in as well and would vertical jig, but I do not, I do vertical jig almost always and do prefer this method but fishing with methods other than this doesn't mean you don't know how to fish, we all enjoy the sport of crappie fishing and should be happy for others no matter how they catch em!

Excellent catch Greg!! How deep were they? I agree with your comments 100 percent. I like to "trawl" myself and don't worry too much what the local "expert" thinks.

Keep up the good work and catch'em however you want!!!
