CP- I agree with you. I hadn't heard about the toxic sap theory, but the prevailing idea in the scientific community is that the spacing does not allow for them to feel comfortable (too tight). In most other lakes besides Maumelle, dragging big hardwood limbs is the way to go. My SCUBA diving experience has been the same, also I have seen a lot of fish concentrated on bamboo crappie condos. I was skeptical about them until seeing one under water.

Gabowman - I've already eaten several of those guys, and delicious as always. I've been eating Maumelle crappie for about a meal a week for the last year.

So for me i like hard wood cover first and foremost, PVC/metal second and ceder or pines last. Just my pecking ordor. Where legal for me just drag a big ole limb from a dead oak tree or Iron wood tree out and sink at a location of your choice. Lots of dead trees around the lakes we fish.
Cedar and Xmas Trees (pines) are low on my list. But they will get better as the needles and small limbs rot off. Some even say Oaks put in with leaves go through a sour'n stage which fish don't care for. I want min 8'' spacing on cover and 18'' not too much.
My favorites are pallet stakebeds , driven hardwood stakebeds, and green Persimmon, Iornwood or Willow Trees.
Second is any brush green or dried or Bamboo.
Last the least and used little are Cedars and PVC.

Note Cedars can be improved if you burn off needles or dry , then drag on gravel road to remove needles. Most use too small of trees and I perfer 8'' dia or bigger trunks so limbs are bigger . The bigger stuff lasts for years. Small trees like xmas trees will be a limbless stick on the bottom very quickly. Saw lots of them on the lake bottom on last drawdown.
