I started spider rigging with 12'. Now i'm looking to upgrade to 14's but if the price is right, I will get some 16's. Good luck.

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I will go with the 14 footers based on the feedback. I must admit that I am a little surprised that Nimrod is a one poler !! I figured the way he catches them , he must have out 30 poles at a time. I ordered the rod holders today and will order the rods tonight. I ain't too proud to catch them anyway I legally can. I am begining to agree with Nimrod that jigs are the way to go. Minnows are too hard to keep alive and expensive !!

Thanks to all for the input. When you see the gold\brown SeaArk Z180 on Nimrod Lake with poles hangin out the front, come introduce yourself. I am looking forward to giving this spider riggin" a try !! I'll be the old gray bearded guy sittin on the front deck.

I haven't even started yet, but I bought all the stuff, and I'm getting ready to even though I'm a little like Nimrod probably because my first love is pulling them out of really heavy brush. Having said that, my buddies that spider rig a lot are going to 16 ft. poles as they are convinced they catch more.

All I use is 16's. I have 14 Wally Marshall Tightline Specials, and 10 Capps and Coleman's. I've got used to the 16's and ain't lookin back, but the 14 is easier to use for most. The Capps and Coleman's are much more limber, and show the lite bites MUCH better. The Wally's are very similar to the PST's, and are much stiffer in cover, but they won't show you the bite when it's lite.

In summary, if you fish heavy cover, trees, brush, etc, get the PST's or something similar. If you fish structure, humps, contours, ledges, drop offs, etc, get the Capps and Coleman's, or a similar type pole. If you can try both. You'll see what I mean.

BTW, I used spinning reels forever and they work great, but I put bait casters on my C and C's, and I really like em.

One more piece of advise. Get the ones YOU like best, it doesn't matter what anyone else uses, it's all about YOU being comfortable with the equipment you use. The idea is to only spend the money once. If you make the wrong decision because you listened to someone else, you'll have to spend the money twice if you're not happy with THEIR choice!!!!!

I troll with 8 rods up front and use 16's in the center, then two 14's, two 12's, and 10's on the outsides...this allows me to swing fish out and around each shorter pole to get em to the back of the boat if i need to...i like the 16's out front because it gets me that much farther out ahead of the trolling motor

16 ft PST's and Caps & Coleman's with spinners. The guy you fished with had it right....just have to get used to it. Good luck with it.
