Didn't hear about the record. I did read the article in the state paper yesterday about fish records and the issues with them, in general. I believe it said that an AGFC employee had to be present, I could be wrong. That pretty much limits things. I caught ONE 3 lb crappie in my life, and it weighed about 2.9 lbs about 5 hours after being on ice. It was at the Toad Suck one stop grocery, but it was long ago.

Fish weights, and the claims thereof, have always amazed me........folks always seem to think their fish is heavier than it is.

I spent years fishing the Ark river, and the fish out of there seldom looked remotely similar to lake fish. They more closely resembled footballs. I attributed it to being more muscular from having to fight the current and the COE all their life! But they would invariably weigh at least a pound more than any lake fish of that length.

What makes me think, is that almost all these 'records' seem to come from what I would call a 'pond'. Isn't the white crappie record from Lake Ola? And the recent bass that was disallowed in NE Ark was from some 87 acre 'lake'. That makes me wonder.....

What makes that a hybrid and not just a regular white crappie?

I got one on the wall that was 16.25 inches and weighed 2.6 lbs. She was caught in December and would have definately been heavier a couple of months later.
I cooked up some fillets this past weekend you helped the cousins catch Last month. I sure like it when they go fishing with you. Of course Sandy wants to tell me how to do it now.

We see a huge difference in the weight of pre-spawn and post-spawn fish. We've seen 16-inch black crappie go from an average of around 2-pounds, 4-ounces in mid-February before they start spawnig to an average of around 1-pound, 10-ounces in late April when they've finished spawning. That's loosing nearly one-third of their body weight in two months. Of course the girth (measurement around the fish at the widest point) decreases as the weight decreases but the length doesn't.

AGFC representative must be present at the "official" weighing. I re-read the paper from this Sunday and that's what it claimed. Also, don't forget it had a girth of 13"...that doesn't seem right for a fish that weighs that much.

I stand corrected (after reading this from the 2012 AG&FC Fishing Handbook) - "An employee of the
AGFC or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must witness the weigh-in and sign the application or a
separate document confirming the fish’s weight."

Hey Don,

I hear Sandy is getting pretty good at going out all by herself and bringing home a mess of crappie so don't be askeered to take her advice!
