Cox Creek Lake, Grant County
I have fished Cox Creek Lake, at Leola, three days this week. On Saturday we caught a few scattered but I had the wife and daughter and was busy untangling lines and pulling jigs off of tree limbs. So nothing reliable to report. Monday I found a bed and caught some nice fish off of it. I ended up letting my stringer slide through my hand and back to freedom as I was tying it back onto the boat, banghead
banghead. They were in 18" to 24" of water, about three to five feet from the bank. I caught them on black and chartreuse tube jig and pink headed black and white feather jig. On Wednesday I couldn't find another bed but managed to catch a mess but no slabs. They seemed a little deeper and more scattered. Not really sure what is going on. I saw guys in the middle of the lake catching some and some of us on the banks getting into them a little, but all small to medium sized fish.
The game and fish just put the new spillway in and they accidently made it to low. Therefore the normal pool level is actually now changed. The water is still pouring over the spillway and the lake is dropping a little. I am not sure if that has had some effect on the fish or not. Cox Creek has never been known as a premier crappie lake but has always had a good many in it. I just don't know what else to try at CCL. I fished jigs, minnows and various lures all in different colors and depths...
I think I may be moving on to some of the other fishing holes.
