Could be either or both, all of them don't spawn at once most times. Unless they are really stacked on the beds and sometimes even then I back out deeper. The big females spend way less time shallow and tend to stack up on nearest cover or drop off.

Last Sunday caught 6 males and 3 females. Yesterday caught 12 males. Is this because females have already layed spawned and gone back out deeper or are males getting beds ready for the females to come in???

I don't consider any question like that dumb. I'm always trying to learn more about the whys and what fors of crappie fishin. Lately I've been feeling like such a rookie cause I haven't really gotten into them hard yet.
I'm gonna guess that they are moving up getting ready. Everybody talked about how early the spawn was gonna be this year due to the warm winter we had. I honestly don't think this is the case, unless maybe they spawned a month ago and I missed it all together. We been fishing shallow in the brush for three weeks, and haven't found fish yet. It's very aggravating this year, as the fish have been hard to find, and now the water is coming up everywhere. Did find a few yesterday just kindda floating around in open water making me think they are about to move up.
