Thread: Maumelle - need advice

O.K., I'm putting the board to the test!

I have a buddy who has recently slipped his boat on Maumelle. He knows I catch a lot of crappie. He has opened his big mouth and made a bet with some friends that he and I will catch more crappie than they do. The challenge is Saturday.

Here's the catch. I have only been on Maumelle three times in my life, all in the winter.

I need a phone conversation with some of you guys with actual (recent) knowledge. I can take instruction and can catch fish, but big water with little visable structure is a pretty big challenge for a one day trip.

Any takers? I'm available for conversation until 10 pm each night. Day calls will depend on my meeting schedule, but try me, I need the advice.

Lake Maumelle:
Crappie are biting well around brush and rocks in 15 to 20 feet of water. Kalin’s Tennessee shad-colored grubs have worked well, as have minnows.

Hey there Titleman, I don't fish Maumelle but I do drive by it everyday and I have talked to people that have crappie fished it. First off it is normally a real clear lake. My guess would be that you would need to fish in the 10 to 20 foot range on creek channel edges or off of the many island points. I remember years ago there used to be a couple guys who crappie fished Maumelle several times a week. They would put there report in the paper on Thursday. Day in and day out all summer long they were catching them on brushpiles in the 20 to 25 ft. range. Almost always there color choices in jigs were Red/White or some combination of red.

Be sure to check the paper this week and let us know how things went.

If it was me I would go prefish if possiable ? Mostly drive around lake shorelines looking for cover on graph . I was told years ago by a coworker he fished the North side ? He said there were stumps and logs in a spot he fished. Would that be opposite from marinas ? If I was going to fish regularly , I'd make some covert night missions to place brush or condos.:D But , I'm sure they are illegal as it is a water supply lake .:o

maybe thats why your buddy gave everyone such short notice.... Your a catcher and he's got a boat on the lake, might this be a way of leveling the field between the two boats....You know everyone is equal type of contest.

Well if its a father son fishing contest my moneys on the ole man. I think my dad retired from fishing undeafeted in head to head match ups with me.
