Thread: Jig Boxes ???

What kind of boxes are ya'll using to keep your crappie fishing tubes, skirts, grubs jig heads and all in ?

I use some of the plastic Plano boxes from Wal/Mart but have found they will let moisture get in sometimes. If the thin cardboard backing on some of the packages gets wet the hooks will rust and sometimes the skirts will discolor. I have seen some of the sealed boxes but they are small and do not have a layout like I am looking for. I would like to get the standard size plastic tray but with a water proof seal.

I haven't had trouble with my plastics discoloring. However, I now only buy red, black nickel, or some other similarly coated hooks to prevent the rusting.

I let my plano boxes sit in the utility room with the lid open for a day after I fish. This lets the moisture out. Helps some.

Otter boxes and Pelican boxes are for sure waterproof. I use a couple of them to keep sandwhich meat dry in the ice chest. The only down side is that they are expensive compared to most plastic bait boxes.

You might try the rust preventing strips. They are small strips that stick to the lids of the boxes and help control the moisture. There are a few different companies that make them.

Discovered today that Traderbills in Hot Springs has a very good selection of boxes. I bought a nifty little waterproof box from Outdoor Outfitters in Hot Springs that is some what like what I wanted, it does have a waterproof seal. The salesman also mentioned the little silicon packets that absorb moisture, I got a coat not long ago that had a couple in each pocket.

I will get the boxes out here in the next day or so and take a couple of pictures. I also got a plano storage box at Wal-Mart, I think it was a 3750 it is a little deeper with a wider space to the front then you can set up smaller compartments to the rear. My plan Packages of jigs in the front different jig sizes and colors in the rear.

We use single and double-sided worm bags from BPS for rubber jigs. We fill the pages up to capacity and one bag (20-25 pages) will hold a lot of jigs. We do keep the jigs in their original container bags but know other fishermen who organize them in ziplocks which are labeled and categorized by type, color, ect. in each individual wormbag. Very easy to find a particular jig just by thumbing thru the pages as each bag holds a particular type and is labeled. But I will also say a 3 lb plastic coffee can works very well also, especially for the Bobby Garlands.....just makes it harder to find a particular jig. I use the Plano storage boxes for jigheads, hooks, weights, ect.

silica gel packs. I save them out of everything I buy. I put them in my jighead boxes, crankbait boxes, gun cases, in my blind bag during duck season, inside my boots or gloves if they get moist...They work pretty good and Christmas morning is a good time to stock up!

A cloth bag sewed up with some rice in it will do the same thing when those silica packs quit.

You can microwave the rice to dry it out again. Just be careful cause it gets hot!
