A "thump" is a standard crappie take that you feel when you are handling that one rod. There really is no feeling quite like it. The tap, the one-timer, we call that a one-tunk, the bump right at the edge of being able to feel it, that differentiates a crappie take from the tick, tick tick of bluegill and sunnies nibbling, telling you that you are on crappies before you even catch the first. It is a sort of a complete sip that is very characteristic of crappie bite. Along with the up-bite, we live on the one-tunk and line watching for even lighter pickups and we watch for the flash of feeding crappies, which can often be just below your toes when you are jigging. I have seen the flash of a miss by a particular crappie up to three of four times before the fish finally gets the target right and we eventually get the one-tunk or the up-bite for a hook set.

This is a very good defination of the "thunk" its a complex feeling to describe, but I think you did a admireable job of putting that feeling in words. Well Done!
