Default GPS Conversion from WGS 84

Can the WGS 84 be used in civilian GPS ? I found a site where it can be converted to use in degrees of latitude and longitude. Is this nessasary or can you change the GPS format ? I have a Garmin E-trax. The corps give out maps to their brushpiles in WGS 84.

If you are using Easy GPS Software, you can change the format to WGS 84, so you can enter them as you received them from the Corps. You would go to Tools, preferences, then "My Coordinate Formats" to change to WGS 84. Then, when you upload into your GPS they will read correctly. I ran into this same problem when trying to enter waypoints received from the Corps. I have a Garmin GEKO and everything worked well for me. Hope this helps, if there is anything else I can help with, just let me know. Shane

I have an older Garmin and it allows you to select from 102 different Map Datums on the Navigation Setup screen. NAD 27 and WGS 84 are the only two I worry about. If you choose one or the other, the waypoints are automatically converted. I do find it necessary to convert the format for use with Easy GPS but that is not too difficult and there are also converters on the web. Understand, when I say "format" I'm referring to degrees, min, seconds vs degrees and decimals of degrees, etc.
