Took my buddy Atticus (5 yr-old grandson) to Lake PB today to try for some Crappie. We started at 7:00 am and by 10:00 we only had four keepers but had also caught a bunch of small ones. We kept moving and finally found what we were after in a stumpfield dragging the bottom in 6-7 FOW. I used BPS SuperSquirt weedless jigs to keep from hanging up and they worked like a charm. Anyway we had 18 really good quality fish by the time we quit at noon. Caught everything in about a one-acre sized area. Very short bite and we had a lot of good fish make it to the top of the water beforegetting off. Atticus had a blast and used the long handle dipnet on all the keepers. He isn't quite big enough to handle the 16 ft trolling rods yet but likes to try and is getting there. The only bad part of the day was when he put the camera case on the back deck without my knowing and it fell off when we hit the open water. Yea, I just couldn't resist punching it up to around 70 to get cooled off before loading on the trailer and didn't even see it until we made a turn and started back. My Nikon D40 with stabilized zoom, extra lens AND the camcorder were all in the bag and are now useless. But it was still a blast and a great day to be out with him doing something we both love doing. Sorry about the bad pics but I took them with my phone and it isn't a very good camera.

Thanks, granddad for taking that youngster fishing. He'll always have those memories the rest of his life! Thanks for the post and the pics, and I hate it about your camera. You are a good sport!
My wife keeps saying I never listen to her....... or something like that!
Is it safe to eat the fish there? I remember when they drained the lake years ago and did a chemical cleanup. I know it was pretty bad back then. Still, its a pretty lake. I've always wanted to go back, but now I live just a little too far to drive down there.
Yesterday was my 2nd day to ever be on that lake and I did some research before I cleaned the fish. I read the last AR Dept of Health report on the PCB issue (can't be too careful) and the Crappie there are ok to eat. In fact, everything is alright except for the Buffalo which are bottom feeders. The lake was drained, bottom sediment removed and then restocked in the mid '80's. Since then the fish have been monitored very closely for PCB contamination. These Crappie looked good during cleaning and I didn't even see any parasites when I fillet'ed them which is fairly uncommon in my experience with lakes that don't run into the river. Was good eating last night!
