    Default Spider Rig Set Up

    For all you spider riggers,

I need to scoot my rod holders closer to my seat for comfort and ease of re-bating etc. By doing this I will be decreasing the distance my poles are out in front of my boat. My question is, how critical is it to have the baits way out in front of the boat ?

I am using 13 foot Black Widows and I think even with this modification my baits will be 8 to 10 feet in front of my trolling motor.

I don't fish clear water lakes so I am hoping this will still work.

I cant scoot my seat closer to the rod holders due to the design of my boat and the fact that the front seat sits on a "box" mounted to the floor.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

Either way will work but if I could scoot the seat I would.

How bout one of those offset seat pedestal deals? You could offset it toward the front and get a little that way.

dblevens. You stole my thunder, I built my own spider rig and actually bought the offset seat pole and it worked out great. Then when done crappie riggin, I just swap poles back to the original one and go bass fishin! Causes a little trouble with the troll motor but I just work it out.

I really don't think it's going to make much difference. On one hand I would keep them out far as possible but you have to weigh the pros and cons.
Ease and comfort is a must. I Haven't seen your boat but it sounds a lot easier to move your rod holders. What are you talking.... Like a whole foot or so..? Even 2 feet I think your still good, I have 11 and 12 foot jig poles ( which I dint spider fish) but I catch a lot of fish 6,8,10 feet from the boat. Do what ever works best for you and your rig.

How much do you need to move? Do you have a pedestal mount on that box? If 6 inches will help, you could do it easily with a Swiveleze offset that fits into the top of a pedestal, or into the pedestal mount.

I have one of these on the front seat on my boat....I also, needed the extra room but i needed it the other way. Dont know if your's is set up on a pedestal or not but if so....I like this, I gave me that 6"'s and was really the icing on the cake. Hope this helps some....

That's the one I'm talking about. It will give you about 6 inches. Got a couple of them in my deer stands too. Makes it easier to turn and shoot behind you. They also make a pedestal that's offset about 6 inches but if he's got a box mounted in the boat already, may need to just put a pedestal base on top of it and get one of these.

if you're only using 13ft. rods to troll with you might think about using a couple of longer rods in the center of your rig. My fishing partner and i use a bn'm pro-trolling 16ft in the center, then(going toward the outside), 14ft pro-trolling, 12ft crappie stick, then a 10ft crappie stick. which we both sit up front and are running all 8 rods out the front. by stair-stepping the lengths it allows you to take a fish on any pole out and around each shorter pole to either side of the boat and not get tangled up in the other rigs.
