    Default Dealing with the wind

I finally got out today to do some pole/jig fishing for crappie but unfortunatly the wind nearly blew me off the lake. I have a 16 ft boat that doesnt handle the wind very well. I gave up and went bass fishing instead. After I left I got to thinking about other methods I could have tried. Maybe I could have tied up and used a rod in reel with cork and jig. What do yall do when the wind wont let you pole fish but you got the crappie bug eating at you?

You can cast for crappie the same way you do for bass and in the same area just use crappie jigs or lures.

When its very windy, we fish around tree tops and I will idle up to them untill my partner can grab a limb, when the wind blows the boat around I will catch one on my end, and we will fish every single hole in the top two or three times, then motor to another one and start the process all over. If I'm by myself, I use a piece of rope on the front and back. Wind blows, but this time of year, if you wanna fish, you gotta learn to deal with it.

    06,

How deep you trying to fish with that jig?

Use a slip cork rig even if fishing 18" on a spinning rod and cast to them. They love the jig action that the waves make. you can fish a lot of water that way. I fish a lot of open, clear water and this way works great. Not the same a "feeling" the bite. But you do get to see it. And when I say that, the cork may just fall over or move off. With the cork on there you can keep the jig in the zone as long as you want. Sometimes I'll jig mine with the tip of the pole and then just let it set there, if the wind is not blowing to make it move.

Find a cove or up a channel that is protected from wind. Here in the mountain lakes we get close to the back from which the wind is blowing if possiable.

i use a drift sock, but i saw guys useing 5gal buckets and log chains in miss. the drift sock works really well and doesn't take up much room in the boat easy to roll up out of the way
If it will hold cornmeal it's big enough for me !!!!!!!!!

Please don't yell at me, but I fish alot of oxbow lakes that theres not much cover except on the edges, so I use a chain to slow me down 8-10' off the brush, and use the TM to steer with the wind.

I don't really think the wind effects the crappie as much as some people think >>> so that said i just get as close as I can and even bump and tie onto the brush. My brush clipper is a must that's not the name it's like a clamp. wait a few minlutes and fish the single pole vertical jig.. You got to learn to handle the wind . and cuss a lot.
