Go back and check your shift linkage. Should have a small rod running from control handle down to lower unit. Has a connection some where. Make sure and mark anything you have to unscrew so it dosen't get out of adjustment when you go back together. My 2cts, Buy a book will save you a lot of greif. I picked up one at local dealer by Clymer for 35.00. Hope this helps some.

Take the hood off,look somewhere around back of the carb,work your shift to forward to rever'. until you see the linkage.The easiest part is taking it apart,pay attention to the linkage as how its connected.Care should be taken with small parts as not to lose them,may need someone to help you hold the foot while lineing up the linkage for rehookup.

The connection is under the carb near the block. Easier to get at with the starter laying to the side.

wish4fish can you tell me the serial and model number? I might be able to find an exploded view of the motor. I do advise buying the kit, especial from a local dealer so you can ask what needs to be taken off. I just did this repair for a friend except on a 1995 Mercury 25hp. We learned that on models with a starter (don't know if yours is electric start) that the starter needed to be removed to reach the linkage. Once the starter was off it was a breeze to undo the linkage and get the lower unit off. The retainer clip that held the shift shaft just flipped up, then we slid the shaft off the pin holding it, and voila the lower unit came right off. I do advise leaving at least one of the bolts that holds the lower unit screwed in just a little so the lower unit does not drop on your feet. Like I said, if you can get me that serial and model number, I can probably find some resources for you. P.S I found YouTube to be an invaluable resource.

Thanks again for all the replies I had a friend come over and show me how to take the linkage off, the only problem was that it had been a while since he had done it because it was his dads motor. We managed to get it off with the starter still on there but I thought no way with the starter on could I get it back on so I pulled it off, was scared to do it but I took a pic of it with my phone and got it back on there. cray what kind of book are you talking about? I have owners manuals to trucks I no longer own but I have lost my manual to the motor. Are you talking about just a owners manual or something else?

wish, he's probably talking about a repair manual. i forgot the website but there's one that sells repair manuals for most all motors or even have where you can see the pictures online. someone here i bet knows that site. pm barnacle bill. he knows more about motors than anyone i've read here. not knocking anyone you understand.
