Nimrod, to protect these fish saying they may help keep crappie from over populating is admirable, however if he went to that lake and caught 4 crappie and 25 bowfins, I would come to the conclusion that they controlled the population of crappie way to well. The predatory nature of this fish leaves it with no natural predator to controll it's population. We as fisherman are it's only threat, if we don't deal with them in a aggressive manner what keeps them from over populating a body of water as small as he described. These fish are super aggresive, they ain't picky about what they eat either, if it swims it is fair game for them. So my opinion is still not swayed about these fish, dispose of every one you catch for the well being of the body of water a person fishes.
You can't beat the taste of them ole fried SLABS N TATERS!!

"Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn." - Chuck Clark :D
Shame on ya'll for killing bowfins and gars for no reason other than for self enjoyment in thinking a good deed done.I could see doing so in ponds and maybe small lakes that were over run by them. The bigger lakes and rivers I seen no reason to kill the bowfin or gar or other fish like drum.I call my self a panfisherman but catch every thing thats in the lakes and rivers. When I hookup to a bowfin, gar, drum, buff'O,carp anything other than a panfish I think its a treat in testing my skills.Crappie, bream and bass love feeding on little bowfins, gar and any other fish even its own.Why kill the panfishes eatable meals when they too help in making them fat.I love the battle a bowfin, gar and drum can give a feller, may take a while to land them and I release all mine unharmed.Other than mice, rats and blackbirds I believe if you kill it you eat it....shame on ya'll...
So your screen name says, turtlebait, if it is a rough fish along the lines of the ones you listed, it will be turned into turtlebait:D, turtles have to eat to, and a fresh dead fish to a turtle, is like prime rib is to us
. turtles are slow and a dead fish is slow and easy for them to catch. So it all depends on how you look at it:rolleyes:. Shame on you for shaming us, we may have just been thinking about the turtles swimming around in the water and their need for a easy meal to:p. If you hit a possum or a skunk with your car, you dont stop and pick it up and call it supper do you:rolleyes:. 9 out of 10 time when you hit a animal with a car you killed it
. and you believe if you kill it you should eat it
. Food for thought
. I am just pulling your leg.:D:D Its hard to argue the point.:D

:D I see your point and alot of fat turtles too and I miss animals crossing the road even turtles:rolleyes:.Any fish that gets on my hook I call it a sport fish nomatter if is a bowfin or smallie.I think my reels work better after a fightingbattle with trash fish
.If its not bass, bream or crappie yeah all others is trash fish. They all sport fish to me so I'll leave the killing of sporty trashy fish to turtle lovers:D.
