Blair, it is a small 12 volt motor that hooks to the carb accelerator by way of a cable. It has a corded remote that you can operator any where in the boat. Once you have your speed dialed in you can push the idle button and it will drop the motor's rpm back to idle. Push it again and the motor resumes it speed. It also has a wide open throttle so you can go to full speed to make a turn or whatever, then when you release it you go back to your orginal speed.
