Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the reason there is a split limit (30 in the southeast and 20 in the rest) is because of the fisical numbers. The eastern and southeastern portion of AR. has ideal spawning conditions for crappie, at least better than the rest of the state. Not to say that the fishing is not good in the north and northwestern part it is just that the deeper, clearer lakes are not quite as productive as far as spawn. Personally I would rather fish the deeper lakes even if the limit is less. Who needs more that 20 crappie that range from 1 to 2 lbs. Of course some of us dont always see that number 20 but what difference would it make, if you cant catch 20 why worry about catching 30. If you catch a limit a couple times a week it doesn't take long to have your winters supply in the freezer anyway. If you are eating more than you are catching, then you are not fishing enough or you have too many family members that like to mooch a mess of fish. Send them out to catch their own and invite you over.:D
Irrespective, thank God for the south and good crappie fishing.
If the good Lord is willing and the creeks dont rise I'll catch a slab today.

does anyone know why Arkansas has a split crappie limit.----Are you talking about the bag limits that are different in various parts of the state.----I know here in Hempstead and Howard county we have different bag limits for the two counties and they are side by side.

Howard county the crappie bag limit is 20 ea.---If you catch 20 of these Millwood crappie that is all you can carry probably, if you get into the big ones.

Bag limits I guess are there to allow the crappie to survive--myself I do not keep small crappie, under 6-8 inches I release them.

I think you have it correct about the spawning part and the cold deep lakes verus the warm or hot and shallow lakes in the western part of the state like Lake Millwood. Crappie needs warmth to spawn and shallow brushy waters.

Many deep water fisherman are placing condos in the lakes to help solve that spawning and survival rate, like Darryl and Jerry at Greeson along with others.
