when spider rigging how close should the tips of my poles be off of the water I seen somewhere they should be about 12 inches but I thought that would be to close and any other info about spider rigging would help me out a bunch bc I think I am going out to do this for the first time tomorrow!!!

I have trouble enough keeping two rods from getting snared. The Lord only knows what I'd get myself into with six or eight. I reckon one's idea of "fun" is relative.

If your rod holder are adjustable, just move them up and down until you find a distance that works for you. Let the fish tell you what speed you need to be at. Try jigs try minnows and a combination of both.

The distance from rod tip to the water isn't as important as keeping ALL the rodtips the SAME distance from the water. I usually have mine about a foot off the water. If one tip is different than the others it will throw you off as you are scanning the rod tips for bites.

    Well said Wayne.
Four poles is about all I care to try. Even with only 4, I can get an attitude. You have seen my boat. If I tried to keep my rod tips 1 foot from the water, I would have to sit on the edge of my seat to keep an eye on them. Mine are proabably 1.5 to 2 feet.
I will warn you that spider rigging takes a lot of patience. Something I haven't mastered yet. Maybe it is just the learning how that requires more patience than I have.
I plan to do more this Fall with my new found confidence I have gained by trolling this Summer.

Most of the time I try to fish with 6-8 poles dependin on whay lake I am on. On the corp lakes except for Grenada ya can run 5 per person. Try to start out about a foot shallower than the finder says the fish are and use different colors on them all till I find the main one they are hitting. Then start changin em out.
