This time of year with the cooler or cold weather it don't take much to keep em alive, I've kept em for weeks without aerating them at all, you should be able to keep a pound no problem probably a couple pounds

I decided to set up a minnow tank in preparation for a thump marathon. I have some time off coming up and I want to buy (and keep alive) some bulk minnows. With this simple setup with an aquarium filter and cooler, how many minnows do you think I could keep alive for a week? More than a pound? What cheap alteration could I add to increase the longevity of the minnows? I know there are probably already posts on the topic. I just wanted to start a bait storage thread. Thanks.

Go to Walmart and get an aquarium pump, cheap and works great. I have one in the boat on a converter for my minners and one by where I park the boat and one in the shed where the tank is.

Matt, go to Bass Pro get a small bottle of Better Bait minnow formula. It's the stuff that turns the water blue. Or go by one of the bait stores and see if they will give you a little. Finer Shiner is what I use. Fill your cooler and add about a teaspoon full add bubbler and let run for a couple of hours. If using chlorinated city water it will disparate in that time being aerated. I just kept a pound or so couple of weeks ago for a few days during our tourney at Grenada in a cooler just like that with just the air pump and no filter.
The filter system you have there is fine, but you will need to "screen off" the intake. The flow will pull all the dead minnows an trash and cause it to collect on the bottom of the pump intake. The 2 port aquarium bubbler with bait server (blue stuff) works pretty good.

Thanks for the suggestions. I added some of the blue water treatment when I first set it up, but it looks like the charcoal filter is removing the chemical (or at least the blue die). I am going by Walmart after work to see what I can find.

Need to use a filter to remove chlorine before adding minnows when using city water .
