Help on deciding first JDM rod for panfish

I think the SUL will suit your needs and will handle a 2lb bass without much fuss.

I sold my Finetail UL to a member here and got the SUL for fighting smaller bluegills. It’ll handle the larger bluegills just fine but I wanted the fun factor to still be there if I got into smaller ones.

Both the Finetail FAX SUL and UL will handle bass in the 2 lb range.

The 2nd one measured between 19” - 20”. Based on the length weight approximation it was over the 3+ lbs mark. Both were caught on the Finetail FAX SUL.

I have seen videos of i_fish land much bigger drum on the Presso 510 XUL. Not had the chance to land bass on it yet. Hopefully soon. i_fish says the Presso is solid tip but I’m not sure if that is the case. Usually one can see or feel where the solid part is inserted into the blank. I can’t on this. It’s might be tubular tip.

Finetail is good value for money. If cost and casting distance (to and extent) was a concern I would go with the Finetail FAX.

He will answer but I wanted to add this....area trout rods are designed for fishing highly pressured "areas" as the Japanese call them. They're not only designed for great sensitivity but designed to land some rather large fish in flat water. It is not uncommon for these areas to stock huge trout. A two pound bass is no problem at all for this rod...neither is a 5 pound bass. Now northern pike....I have no clue other than I know they get way up into the double digits.

The Area Fishing guy has landed some pretty huge trout on these rods.

Great rods for still water.

I got help from a Crappie.com member for the two JDM Matagi blank builds. Will post some pictures tomorrow in the rod building forum, but I want to catch a few fish on them before I can get a better feel of them.

Yes, northerns can get quite large. But I doubt I would be catching anything in the double digits weight wise, with a 1/64oz jig and plastic

I haven’t caught pike but I caught a lot of pickerel when I lived in Long Island. They bite through light line easily. Not sure light line will help land a toothy critter like pike. But you never know what’s gonna take the lure. I was out fishing for bluegill and crappie when I caught those bass.

If a 5 lbs pike hits and doesn’t cut off the line, you will land it with an area trout rod.

Yes, northerns can get quite large. But I doubt I would be catching anything in the double digits weight wise, with a 1/64oz jig and plastic
