Thread: 6.10 Corto and Twitch Master Line

A quick trip to the lake yesterday afternoon gave me another hour or two with the new monofilament from Varivas on a different rod and different fishing technique. First trip out was float fishing with the champagne colored 3lb test line. A good choice for that method, no doubt. Tuesday afternoon I switched the reel over to the Olympic GraphiteLeader 6.10 Corto, a steely Ajing rod that has tamed a many Green and Brown beasts in the local creeks. With a 1g Decoy jig head and a Greenie Weenie Trout Magnet, I probed the swollen muddy waters for a bite or two. Second cast I felt a hard thump....

A Channel Cat was on the other end and did not appreciate the stinging in his lip. Bite detection no problem and I did feel just a little stretch when he neared some structure then the bank. I put hands on him, snapped a pic or two then released. A small bass was next, no pics but just a tic on the line. I was fishing very shallow waters <2ft, and the muddy bottom was evident in the feel in the rod and line. I would bounce over a rock or two every few casts and the nylon did telegraph the inanimate structure nicely. Not as crisp as braid....what I have been using for over three years now....but adequate for certain. Next up, several small Gills, this one being the biggest and most willing to hold still for a pic.

Not a line stretcher but fun on the UL equipment. The 6.10 Corto has been reviewed here many times but just to a reminder of its action...steely backbone most of the way up the blank and a very sensitive tip. This rod with good nylon can realistically hand most bank bullies you might encounter in fresh waters....without teeth of course. Second trip out and I think the line and rod pair nicely for cast and retrieve of small jigs. And finally, on my way out I made a current break next to the creek channel with some loose rocks that will serve as a nice current break when the water rises. The White Bass love to stage over the mud flat and will hang tight in behind these rock piles....come on Spring.

You made the best out of that trip for sure... with all the rain we got I figured it would be a bust but you scratched out some fun. That 6.10 Corto is a great rod for trout IMO and I’ve caught a good many on it and some bruisers at that. That line is some good stuff and I am impressed with it as well. Thinking of taking advantage of that 20% off right now at Varivas. Not as good of a deal as around Christmas but still a good bargain. I got off on a tangent but nice read and glad you got to bend the rod!
