    Default Crappie Spawn

Anyone still finding Crappie still on the beds in North Alabama or have they finished and moved out?

Admittedly I don't fish from a boat or kayak, so that may be the root of my problem, but I went several times from the last 2 weeks of March through most of April to several different places that theoretically "should" be where crappie would spawn and never got a single bite. The only place I've ever been able to catch spawning fish consistently is Guntersville. I don't reckon I've ever found any crappie on beds on Wheeler, but I also only started targeting crappie from the bank in 2020

Do most of the crappie on Wheeler spawn out in the middle of the lake on flats or something? I've caught a bunch in Guntersville spawning on rip rap in shallow water, but have never been able to replicate that in the Decatur area. It's a head scratcher.

Bank Bound,I’ve never found them spawning on Wheeler either?I have a couple other places. But I’m dumb every year and still try and find them on Wheeler when I know they are spawning in those other areas.

They still deep and holding here. They should have done laid and gone but it’s late this year for some reason. Seems they are just staging up and waiting. It’s been that way for two weeks.

For those who catch spawning fish on Wheeler - what sort of structure, depth and habitat are you looking for usually?

I struggle with the spawn on wheeler but sometimes can find them on shallow stake beds or brush and stumps in 3-6 feet......I may not be fishing shallow enough or quiet enough in my 16 ft aluminum and havent tried my canoe for that yet but I will get around to it......

I normally fish tributary creeks in Wheeler especially those with fallen trees which I think the crappie spawn on but it has been hit or miss this year for me
