Late day on Big G, 23 Mar
Took a friend and his two boys out Saturday, we managed to get on the lake in afternoon about 1330. Solunar tables predicted a major feeding period from 1454-1654. Fishing was very spotty even with the major feeding period in the late afternoon. I was long lining in 6-8 FOW. I was not marking any fish even though we'd pick one up every now and then. Weather was awesome though with just a light breeze and a light ripple on the water, sunny, bright and warm, it was the best weather day of the year so far for me. I had heard some other reports that the bite was at last light. Well, as slow as it had been, we decided to stick it out to see if we could manage a few more for the table in the early evening light. Well, it was like someone rang the dinner bell as the sun was getting ready to set. It exploded, and the fish were on! We had multiple fish on numerous times. The bait of choice was a black w/chartreuse tail slider. It didn't seem to matter what size jig head was on, if it was in the water it got bit! One of the kids was holding a rod waiting for another fish to be brought in/landed before casting back out. Just holding it in the water with about 6' of line out to keep it out of the way and it got hammered right next to the boat! We finished with 32 and it all happened in about 60 minutes, pure pandemonium for 60 crazy minutes! By then, it had gotten too dark to see the lines in the water and untangle lines, so we called it a day, and headed for the dock. An evening bite to remember for sure. Water temp was 62-63 and stained with about 18-24" visibility, trolling speed at 0.9 - 1.1 seemed to work. Like a few folks said on other posts, it was like a star studded cast in there catching fish that night. Was fun to see everyone on the water. Believe the fish were on the bottom all day because they didn't show on the graph. Heard on another part of the lake where stuff is starting to float up off the bottom and the lake is getting ready to turn over there. Turnover has always been a hard time for me to get on the fish. Hope it holds off for awhile.
