I appreciate the responses thus far eluding to the huge responsibility that comes with carrying a weapon.
I pray I never have to use my weapon in defense. My first line of defense is simply to try and avoid a situation if I can. Always have an out too.. I am always aware of my surroundings and try and have a plan for escape. If its just me and approached by a robber, I'll just give him the money and let him go. If its my loved ones and I fear they are in danger, it will get ugly.
Even with training....and lots of thought.....nobody knows exactly what they will do untill faced with a situation. I really hope i never have to use mine. I would rather have it and not need it though than to not have it and need it.

Back to the OP....were the robberies at the boat launch? I have heard rumors of "lake pirates" who literally rob you in your boat on the water but have never heard of any around here.
Well damn pirates on the river . Hell I always keep a little Saturday night special for snakes. But I guess I will have to start bringing the big boy with me.
I don’t have any kids as it’s now me and the wife. Every gun is loaded in the house as we live in the most remote sticks of southern Indiana. Too much going on with the druggies and such. Better to be safe than sorry.
Darn tootin

I was a firearms instructor and I to carry xds 45 in my back pocket. I hope I never have to pull mine out either but it will be sad day for some one trying to rob me in my boat or when I'm with my family. To old to fight anymore
I’m normally with a buddy when I’m fishing but all they gonna get from me is a wallet with no cash and a cracked iPhone lol. Everything else is fishing gear I wouldn’t use deadly force unless I absolutely had to. Like someone said earlier things can be replaced.

A lot of you talk about not trying to stop a robber if alone and you better rethink that and kill him first if you have the chance. What is to stop him from killing you after you gave him your money. He has got your money and a lot of times they leave no witnesses especially if they are young gangsters. Pull a gun on me and I will do everything possible to walk away as the survivor.
Amen brother me to. If I can get my hand in my back pocket I will defend myself.
Yep.i remember several years ago a guy shot a guy and his little boy execution style and made the dad watch.it was somewhere in Alabama.i dont know if the dad had a gun or not but if he had and had the chance to use it they would both probably be here today.jmo

I agree with the all the training you can get. I also think that all persons should have to take a training course on use the weapon you are intending to carry. I had people in my classes that didn't need to have a gun in there hand. I even had one person to have a miss fire and turned around to ask what to do, luckily I was close enough to grab the barrel to push it toward the ground down range. Get the training it is well worth the money it cost. Do your research on your instructors in your local area. I to have all weapons in my house loaded an unloaded gun or no shell in the chamber does you no good. Thank God I have never had to draw my firearm. I use to tell all my students that if you have to fire your weapon you are responsible for that bullet where ever it may go and if you fire your weapon it will change your life forever even if your in the right. Please be careful and think about your actions. This being said I hope I never have to use it but I will if I have to
Just my opinion hope I didn't offend anyone

Don't mess with my wife, my kids, my grandkids, or my fishing tackle.
Excellent thread here. I know there are a lot of us here that are older folks. I've been told that there is a federal law which states that if anyone assaults a person 65 yo or older, it becomes a federal crime. And that the victim can defend himself from such assault with deadly force. Now that was a lawyer that told me that. I've never seen the law myself, so I can't say if it is the truth or not. If it is, it's one of those rare laws that speaks with common sense.
I will say, however, that I do carry whenever I leave the house and should anyone plan to do harm to myself and/or my family (or friends), they will be met with deadly force.
Alabama has a "Stand Your Ground" law. If there is threat or a perceived threat , I can defend myself or others with deadly force, whether I'm at home, at a boat ramp, or in a Walmart parking lot. I will exercise that right if I am threatened at a boat ramp by a meth head. As Wiley more or less put it, there decision is to try and commit the crime, my decision is to defend myself. It might not work out good for either one of us, but it's definitely not going to work out good for them if I have about 3 seconds notice.
I am no pacifist by any stretch, and I carry religiously. But the idea of taking a human life does not sit well with me. I spent just shy of 24 years in the military and no doubt some of my direct actions with the munitions I prepared that were expended on the enemy took lives. I don't feel bad about that as it was my duty.
I am going to do everything within my power to avoid using deadly force to include fleeing or surrendering my property before discharging my weapon. That's just me and I am not preaching. Everyone who carries knows (or should know) their limitations.
My sincere hope is that my weapon stays holstered, except practice time, forever. I conceal, and certainly don’t talk about it. The less that is known, the better my advantage if the unavoidable happens. My awareness of what’s around me has certainly improved since I started carrying. Now, do I have the obligation to assist a stranger by using deadly force? I’m still wrestling with that one. As has been mentioned, your life will undoubtedly change forever. Am I willing to make that sacrifice for a stranger?
Oh, and I hope y’all don’t mind a TN guy chiming in!
You are welcome here ET. This subject covers all of us.
On another topic. I heard University of Tennessee offered Kim Jong Un the HC job and he turned it down.. J/K:angel:
Man! If he wasn’t offered, he and I are the only ones that haven’t been! This is a mess of epic proportions! I’m an alumni, but too old for protesting! Seriously, at this point I would slap the interim tag on Hoke for another year and hope this nonsense dies down.
He seems to be an offense minded guy and likes to air it out. He knows there's no hope of that in Knoxville.
For the record, I'm not trying to sound blood thirsty or trigger happy. (not saying that because I think anyone implied that I was) Taking someones life is nothing to be taken lightly. I do think, and I think I posted much earlier in the thread, that EVERYBODY that carries should come to terms with what pulling the trigger would mean long before they ever carry a firearm. I've made my peace with it, but it's the last case scenario. I hope I never have to pull the trigger, but if I will if I have to. I have only been in one situation where I've actually drawn my pistol on a person with the intent of protecting my family. Thankfully it ended without gunfire.
all I can say on this matter is,
I'd rather be JUDGED by 12 then CARRIED by 6 !!!
Amen brother

Well darn. This isn't good. We go night fishing there all the time. I've never seen anything or heard anything. That place is so dark too. They could add a street light pole there that way others can see what is going on. Maybe we should let Game n Fish know and they can get with AL Power to get that ball rolling. The guys I fish with all carry so ... but the sad thing is that if you shoot them, you'll probably get charged with murder. The law is in their favor.
“Stand your ground” and it use to be a street light on that bridge years back. No one ever said if it was at the ramp or the bridge. I’m still curious about that

This is not Florida, so that stand your ground rule is for the country boys haha. My dad's assistant - a man broke into her home and she attacked him and shot him in the leg ... he sued her and won, so yep.
As for that street light comment, I contacted my friend with Game and Fish and told him about this. I am going to contact Alabama Power this morning about this and see if they can go place another street light there. But we are always in a boat and never have this issue. But any time you go to the country to fish, you need a pistola. Thanks for posting this as this is one of my main destinations for night fishing.
Attachment 281991 and it goes on for a while about different things but again if in any situation U have to pull that trigger it will change your life and a long process will begin.

If you can prove it was self defense, yes. They better have a weapon. I'm just saying, Alabama is so backwards with the laws, I have seen all kinds of stories where it turns in their favor. Now me personally, I'd shoot. I go there at night with friends who carry and we're on a boat, so I don't even think about it really. But this gave awareness to this location, and I appreciate it. I wish I had more to go by, but I did call and email AL Power. They told me they will go out and take a look and see where the best place to put one up at. I told them over by the rocks.
Yeah it use to be a light right by the walkway down to the bridge. Maybe they will get one up there. Still won’t stop crackheads from doing stupid things. But it atleast won’t be pitch black
