    Default Transom question thoughts

Good day, im putting my transom on my 14ft aluminum starcraft and im hoping i can go with 2 3/4 inch apa ply boards on the inside 1 3/4 inch outside sealed with Thompson water seal and use 5200 around edges. Im mouting a 9hp nissan and trolling motor.

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

Not sure what apa plywood is but your transom wood should be pressure treated. 5200 is good stuff but Thompsons water seal will breakdown in 6 months. If you want a wood finish use spar varnish. If you just want to seal the wood I would paint so you can tell when the wood is exposed later and reseal. I'm not an expert but I have built a few boats and this is just my opinion.

Tony is correct on the Thomson sealer is a temporary solution. I'm no carpenter but my dad was a painter and he didn't care for Thomson sealer.

Don't use treated wood the newer treated wood is treated with a copper product, it will cause aluminum to corrode. (google it and see what I mean) I don't even use it on my runners for an aluminum boat. Use some epoxy or polyester resin and thin it with acetone and brush on. Either this or the spar varnish. I have an old Montgomery Ward V bottom that I cut my parts out of 2x12 material and ran it through a planer to make it about 1 and 1/8th inches thick and put 3/8" plywood on the outside of the boat I found some spar varnish cheap an used it to coat. However I believe the epoxy or polyester resin is better. That is what our local bass boat repair shop does when repairing wood floors or transoms on bass boats.

Go do a search on the website tinboats.net on the topic. The guys there are adamantly against using PT plywood for the reason already mentioned. They also have a good sealer that is made by combining a few different products. I think its linseed oil, varnish, and another product.

That is true about the new treatment not being compatible with alum. That's somthing that i didn't think about. Only stainless steel or brass for fasteners. Glad someone corrected that. My boat work has been wood only.

Ollie's discount store in Madison had a good price on a good brand spar varnish, I bought a gallon a month or so ago for my boys to use on the wood in an old aluminum V bottom that I gave them to fix up.....might save a little money if you have not already bought it.
