I made a short trip today, found Crappie on the beds in four feet of water returning 16 that would measure along with a few shorts. The Gills were in the same area, but a little shallower. I ended up keeping a limit of big gills and shellcrackers. It was a great day to be on the water, one of those magical days where a fish hits every cast. Best bait was my old favorite a 1/32oz spinner with a white twister tail. I didn't bring my fish finder, so not sure on temperature. The males were dark with blood tails and a couple of the females were leaking eggs just from me handling them to unhook them. They should drop in the next couple days.
I'll leave the location unnamed so the Crappie can spawn in peace and I can get back on the gills in a few days.

I was a little surprised to find any spawning, I was always told they spawned on the full moon. The gills were a nice bonus though.
Nice catch. Keep that info to yourself![]()

Great job DB! Thanks for returning the crappie. I didn't make a post for the last 'recent' trip with my son. We found crappie on beds...left them alone too. Instead, we had the great pleasure of seeing/watching two Bald Eagles. That was enough for us.

Fishing is a privilege...catching is a bonus. Enjoy each precious moment we have to experience our great outdoors!
It's strange that for years I could only catch Crappie when they were spawning. Now that I can catch them year round, I feel that I should leave them alone during the spawn.
Nice job Ditch....a lot of the fun is in the catching.
I'm not sure anything fights like a bluegill pound for pound.
I've seen pictures of 3 and 4 pound shellcrackers in some states. I don't think I could even get one in that size unless in open water, LOL!
A 3 or 4 pound shellcracker sounds like a lot of fun especially on a UL and 4 lb test.
