Thread: Long Lining setup

I will be purchasing some long lining gear soon and am looking for some advice on this technique.

Any information pertaining to equipment, line type/weight, jig size/quantity and trolling speed would be greatly appreciated.
What rod type/length is most popular?

I fish 2 twelve foot and a 10 foot rod off the front. there is a three pole limit on Weiss. other lakes I fish 2 twelves and 2 tens. Off the back i fish 6 foot rods but it really doesn't matter. I fish 6lb line. I use viscous, stren or a high quality line. Cheap line such as crappie max will work but it has a lot of memory and will tangle. Most of the time I fish 1/16th or 1/24th jigs. Don't know where your fishing but adjust to water depth. You always need to keep your bait above the fish in my opinion. speed varies depending on depth and how active the fish are. As a rule .7 to 1mph is a good place to start. Vary your speed and let fish tell you what they want. Good graph is important. You need to fish areas that have a lot of bait. You also need some floating material to wrap around the base of you rods. If you troll long enough a rod will get jerked out. you can buy rod floats at bass pro or cabelas or you can use pipe wrap. I run 4 short rods in back and 2 up front on each side 10s and 6ft. But you will have to try different things every boat will be different. Start small and add rods as you go. As far as jigs get some in all sizes 1/23 1/24 1/16 and maybe a couple of 1/8 if you're fishing deep lakes like Marin or wedowee.

On the big G we run 4 rods spooled with 4 or 6lb Mr.Crappie high vis per side out of the back. We use folding chairs to set in and man each side. Going from the motor out on each side we run 2, 8ft, then 1 10 ft then the 12 foot for the out side, this gives us a 32 ft spread factoring in the 8 ft width of the boat. Boat is controlled with Minkota Exterra remote running at .8 mph, using 1/16th weight jigs has been the best for us, with motor oil and june bug being the best 2 inch grub colors and pink/ white,and blue/ green with the paddle tails(Charlie brewers).Point of interest ,buy a very long handle rubber mesh dip net to slide the fish into when they are on the the 10 and 12 ft rods

My set-up is a little different. We fish 4 rods out the front (2 off each side) and 4 out the back. The front poles are 18' and 14'. The rods in the back are 12' and 8'. All rods are B&M Pro Staff Trolling Rods and reels are spinning type (these do not have to be fancy, I got mine for $10 each at Grizzly Jig and have been using them for 4-5 years). We typically use 1/16 or 1/32 depending on water depth and we normally only use one jig per pole. Typical speed is .9-1.5 mph, depending on what the fish want. Line is 6# hi-viz, several brands will work.

about how far back behind the boat,or how much line out

Let the fish tell ya ! throw em out at different distances until you figure out where the are usually just a good cast sometimes let out lil more line maybe a lil less . You don't have to have nothing fancy to start with .i used what I had setting around .i now have 6-14' rods and sure they r nice but I don't catch anymore fish than I did when I used what I had.the longer rods helps spreads it out and does cut back on tangles .i run 4 on each side front and back unless on a lake with pole limits. Use 1/4-1/64 just according to the depth of water and the fish.6# hi viz

i-trek rod holders four sets total two in back and two up front. I run six 8 ' proangler rods fanned out in back with zebco 33 platinum reals spooled with 8# green xtra strength P LINE. Up front I use two 10' and two 12' proangler rods with same real and line. i use 1/16 ounce Road runner jigs with Slider or southern pro 2" grubs. I use the slider crappie grub and the 2.5" minnow sometimes.
80 Ultrex Minn Kota up front powered by four 31 size Deka batteries that are on a switch so I can change during the day. Lowrance HD8 Gen 1 depth finder/chart.

i use the Zebcos because i can put 130 yards or so of the 8# test line and they are easy for my kids and In-laws to cast. Proangler rods are awesome for this application but the shortest one they make is 8'.

Sounds like some good set-ups yall are running. I have always spider rigged might have to try long lining sometime.

I fish a 12', 9' and 6' rod out each side in front of boat. Almost always use a 1/16 oz jig. Throw back about 40 feet. Measure off at home to get a visual on about how far that is. Go .8 to 1.2 mph. When waters cold super slow can go faster as water warms up. Viscous 6lb hi vis line. Ask around for your lake what color jigs to use. If water is a little stained I use black and chartreuse, almost always good. Usually go lighter colors as sun gets high on the water. Make wide turns to avoid getting tangled. If I hook a big bass or striper I worry more about keeping it out of my other lines than catching it. I'll try to get fish up and reel fast to keep it out of other lines. If you stray into shallow water just hit full speed on trolling motor until your out of the shallow water. I have trolled successfully in water as deep as 25' or as shallow as 2.5 to 3'. I use a 1/32 jig and let out less line and go a little faster if I find them in shallow water.
