    Default help please

i have my yearly vacation next week. all my main spots here in ms where i have a place to stay are flooded. i have a sister in Athens Ala. that i only get to see about once a year so i thought i may bring my boat and do a little visiting and a little fishing. problem is i know absolutely nothing about fishing that area. any help is appreciated. I got a good sized boat so i can handle large bodies of water as long as the wind is not too crazy.

There is a lot of good fishing in the Athens area. The Elk River which feeds into Wheeler lake is a good spot. Swan Creek area should be good along also. You are probably 1 hour away from Guntersville Lake also....so you could make a trip over. Athens is also around 1 hour from Pickwick and Wilson....both great spots to fish. There are a lot of guys on this forum that are much better fishermen than me..hopefully they will be able to give you some more info...Limestone bay is about 30 minutes from Athens and Prater has been catching a few over there. Good luck.

Just my opinion here, since I'm no crappie expert, but I'd focus on the water closest to where you will be - and that should be Wheeler. No sense burning up fishing time by traveling elsewhere. Get a lake map of Wheeler and find a couple of ramps close to you where you can put in. Dependent on the air temperature (it's kinda cold right now) I'd probably located several deep water channels headed toward shallow areas to fish if the temps are still cold. If it warms up between now and then (and stays warm) I'd probably find me some shallow flats to do some drifting. Elk River might be a good bet for both channels and shallows - in the coves and upstream.

Don't know what type of fishing you are planning to do but if it's pushing jigs. I will be more than glad to tell you what i was doing and where I was with some color/speed/depth help. I know everyone likes to fish different ways. Just shoot me a PM if you push jigs. I was fishing limestone, it's probably 30ish minutes from Athens till your in the water

Limestone is a great call for the Athens area. Also Flint creek (Launch at the I65 Bridge area) is good and you can also go upstream out of Decatur on the Flint. Lots of options there for sure.
