I use 6 lb mono. I try to use some that has a little color to it - this way I can see it if a crappie has picked up the jig and is swimming toward me. I use a short flexible rod and a small spinning reel. IMO Rod/reel don't make a lot of difference.

Don't delay too long. The Crappie will eventually leave the docks for deeper water and this technique won't work again till fall.
