Rumor has it that they are in the bushes and trees shallow on Smith

If fishing on 2nd the most difficult lake in the world (Bankhead) weren't enough, I'm going to try Smith(most difficult) next weekend. I'm wondering if anybody knows a water temp or anything??? After we strike out on crappie, we're going to try the stripers in the lights.
If you're wondering, the Bankhead crappie seem to have vanished... They're not on deep structure and they're not on the banks. They are certainly not in the tree tops either. We've tried everything and can't even find them on a high dollar fish finder. Is it possible that they are all in other people's freezers? Probably... Hope somebody is getting a bite somewhere. I wish I had a better report other than don't do what I did, but I don't. Good luck and I would advise you not to waste your time and gas at Bankhead right now.

What do you use for striper on smith.
58-60 degree Wednesday morning
It all depends. Sometimes we troll during the day and use umbrellas, not A-Rigs, the real umbrellas with 9 1 oz. bucktails on them. When we fish the regular lights we use live shad or sometimes extra large shiners. When we can find underwater lights we'll typically just throw small swim baits to avoid too much splash and kind of pick and choose which one we want to catch.
I fished Bankhead Monday for about 3 hours and caught 11. I was just beating the banks around docks and lay downs with a blue/chart grub. The ones I did catch though were right on the bank. Pretty much had to hit the bank with the lure and drag it into the water.
Lucky5 that reminded me of a night fishing trip as a kid. My friend said, braggingly, "hey, I can cast my weedless worm so far, you can't even hear it hit the water." Come to find out when one of us hung up, when I shined the spot light, we'd been throwing our lures into a cow field for an hour![]()

Fished clear Creek saturday. The water temp was 58-59 degrees. The crappie bit hard at day light, in brush about 2-2.5 feet deep.
We made it to Smith last Friday, 4/11, and got skunked on the crappie. Never had a bite that we even thought was a crappie. We did manage 11 lb and 8 lb stripers though. I guess all of the rain has ruined the crappie fishing everywhere. I haven't caught a crappie from Bankhead or Smith in my last 8 fishing trips. Oh well, the stripe sure are fun to catch in the lights!
