Default Culling question for all the tournament folks....

I have fished many bass tournaments, and the culling process is pretty simple. In crappie tournaments, with the possibility of culling through many fish, what is easiest process? Any thoughts?

At most crappie tournaments we weigh in 7 fish. Some folks try to keep too many fish in the boat and overcrowd their fish and make them weak. I try to not have over about 10 fish in the boat most times. I use a balance beam to cull fish most of the time, it seems to be most accurate to me. I have tried to use digital scales but its too difficult for me to remember the weights of the fish. Heck some days we don't have 7 fish so we don't have to worry about it. Where are you going to compete in crappie tournaments at?

Culling beam is the way to go. Like Roger, we only try to keep around 10-15 in the livewell. Usually at the end of the day we have 4-5 that stand out and then have to use the beam to determine the rest.

I use digital scales and markers I got from Academy sports, you can set the weight on each one and cull out the smallest.
In a tourney that doesn't have a dead fish penalty I only have 7 in the box, in a tourney where they have to be alive I have 9 in case something happens to any of them.

The Coosa River Crappie Club is holding our meeting this coming Saturday the 22nd. Lots of good folks that enjoy fellowship and crappie fishing. Look at the CRCC header at the Alabama home page for information.

Shoals Area Crappe will have their first tournament on Wheeler this Saturday. CRCC is another good club. What area are you located?

Coach where are you located? The area you are in should be where you try to start fishing tournaments so it is close and you can keep your travel expenses down.

The Coosa River Crappie Club is a group of local folks who love to fish for crappie. Some of us used to fish the national crappie tournaments and we have a couple of teams who still do. We enjoy the competition and fellowship. There is not a lot of money involved in our tournaments so we hope that keeps it more fun. We are family centered with children and women who compete. Last year we had about 60 members. We are having our annual get together this Saturday Feb. 22nd. We have a dinner like a church dinner or family reunion where everyone brings food and it is always great. We also give out prizes from last year and set our tournament dates for this year and make any rule changes we find as needed. We fish Weiss, Neely Henry and Logan Martin each once in the spring and once in the fall then have an end of year classic which is usually at Neely Henry since it is in the middle. We welcome you to come and check us out if you would like and ask questions if you have any. Please introduce yourself around and let folks know it is your first time there. The times and address of where it will be is in the sub category at the top of the Alabama page under Coosa River Crappie Club. You may call me if you have any questions @205-283-7638.
