    Default Epic

I figured I'd put this here even though it's hard water fishing. 6lb and I have been getting out when we can doing some ice fishing. I had a short window yesterday afternoon after some prior commitments, the the boss called and I had two emergencies to deal with at work. But I wasn’t giving up! I met 6lb at about 2:30 at our spot and we headed out to a known deeper basin of the lake. 6lb got into the bluegill right away settled into his chair.

He did catch a crappie and a couple bass too.

I continued to struggle catching the occasional bluegill with not much success. Now for the epic part or crazy however you want to look at it! I believe it was about 5:00-ish dusk settling in and we headed for the truck. We stopped at a few holes that someone else had been fishing (we had spoke with them earlier and they had caught 3 crappie). I dropped in a Ratso with a chartreuse/white plastic and bam, fish on. The screen lit up with marks. I couldn’t get the bait down fast enough. Bam! Another just as fast as it got near them. 6lb yanked a couple out of another hole 30' away but the bite dried up.
I had pole trouble and quickly grabbed the closest one rigged with a 1/32 Clam chartreuse Pinhead. The next 19 fish came in about 10 minutes!! And not small ones.

I would drop down set the hook and 6lb would pull the transducer out of the way, take the fish of and repeat. Name: IMG_4519.jpg

Hard to believe all those were caught in a 10-15 minute span after being on the struggle bus earlier! lol.

By the time I got home it was 6:00! Mama had dinner ready. After dinner I was ready for couch time but got right after cleaning fish. Pretty good haul when the fish are nice-n-fat

Sounds like a blast!!! Good looking mess. Amazing how fast things can change. Paid your dues earlier in the day and got rewarded in the end!

Oh yeah,I’ve see that happen, and it’s fun as fun can be when your line go’s slack on the drop It was a great weekend to be out on the ice in Minnysota too…40-45 temps blue bird sky’s and calm conditions. Lots folks out and a lot of rosie red cheeks and foreheads from light sun burns this weekend.
    How deep is your ice?

If you had told me this tale, I wouldn't have believed it but I was there to see it and it was AWESOME!
That was short window of time to make a long time memory. My hole was less than 30' away, more like 20 and a couple of feet shallower; I marked 2 fish, landed one nice crappie and lost what I believe was an even bigger one right at the hole. My hole then went blank. He was on the spot, not I.
When 870 got going, I just shut my unit off and went over to his hole to help and observe.

He'd drop in the hole (he was in about 10 1/2' of water), his lure wouldn't even make it half way down and the fish were rising up to meet it. Literally seconds to hook up and start reeling in.

If you look closely at the right hand traditional sonar screen,(notice the sticker on the rod box!) you can see the history of his lure dropping on the big section of screen (the real time sonar is the narrow band on the right), his lure is at 6' and you can see in the history window that the fish was already rising to meet it; FISH ON!!! That bunch of red on the bottom is all fish.

I'd had a wonderful time with the 'gills, and the one crappie I got from that earlier hole was perhaps the meatiest crappie I'd ever cleaned. Really chunky.
I'd end the day with 2 keeper crappie and 17 good bluegills, 7-8" for the most part.

I can't wait to go back to this water again. I don't expect we'll top that episode but hey, ya never know! Thanks for the memories, buddy!
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
