J ,do you hunt in Alcorn county ? When I coached ther were no dear there back in the late 80's . We hunted in Tennessee .

I’ve been lucky enough to get into a handicap and youth only area on Prentiss-Tishomingo line due to my pegleg. Gotta look at it as a blessing, the rangers and biologists really take care of it. 900 acres with nice wheelchair accessible shooting houses and green fields planted.
I remember those days though growing up. We hunted in Prentiss but there were hardly any deer. We went to Benton county which wasn’t much better, or South down around Noxubee. Now they had deer even back then!

Feeling a little redeemed tonight.
Did not drop a hammer, but had several deer in close today, from three o’clock till way after dark. All yearlings, but I like watching them anyway. And managed to ease out after dark with no blowing hoorah.
I’ll take a day like that anytime.

Prob wouldn't be alot left with a .300 Rem Mag up the tailpipe anyway. Regardless, it woulda been a real mess. BTW, I shoot that same rifle using 150 gr. bullets.

Thought I was gonna have a short sit today. Got in the blind at eleven-thirty, uncase and load rifle, arranging things quietly. Had not put ear protection in yet. Look up the field and out walks an eating size deer at about a hundred-fifty yards. Do I shoot and burn my ears further out? Nope. The way these houses are made, foot and a half deep tunnels for windows, they will absolutely deafen you. Made that way to be wheelchair friendly. I hurry and get protection in, put scope on deer, and something just doesn’t look right…
Crank up to ten X and look again, dang it! Little three-four inch spikes.
The biologist encourages me to take does here, but bucks are supposed to be twelve inch inside, and/or fifteen inch beam for adult hunters.
Fifteen years and under, anything goes. I grin and think buddy, you are living dangerously. You make a habit of this and one of the youngsters will smoke your behind!

Three o’clock, the doe made a run across the field. I was eating deer sausage and gouda cheese. Dropped my snacks, pow. As it should be, one shot one kill.
Had brought out one of my safe queens, three hundred h&h Ruger number one with beautiful wood. It loves one hundred eighty grain Sierra round noses. Three quarter inch at one hundred, it is a keeper. Dropped her off at my favorite processor to be made into link sausages. They have a recipe that no one can match. Had a good visit with old friends. Life is good!
