Sounds like you got it made in the shade!!
Sorry you missed the buck. They don't get to be deer-of-a-lifetime without being smart and tricky! Oh well...next time!
Nice report, Keith!
Boys get up and out early but me not so much. Another warmer day so finally got out and set up on open field around 8 sitting on my chair. Don't do tree stands anymore as do as well on ground and you can take naps safer that way which is important. LOL Was nestled under tree with weeds on either side for good screening with open look straight ahead. Wasn't there but few minutes when Buck of a lifetime popped out of tree line along ditch right ahead of me. He came walking determinedly as he was going somewhere with his head totally up. He was going to cross into strip of woods I was on just a few yards from me so when he was 50 yards or so out I had to try and my gun was leaning up against chair. Soon as I moved it a bit he jumped and took off to my right INTO THE low hanging SUN so I couldn't see him till he was at end of field where I popped off a shot. this all took but a few seconds and went and checked but no blood at all. Oh well that was fun.
Didn't stay long as the lake was calling me. Went to a dock I had success at last couple times I was up there and guy and his kids were around it but not on it. He came up and of course I started talking to him as I am want to do, right LSL Angler, and he gave me vital bit of information. close by dock I knew of he said he killed them on day before and I had seen him and son on yesterday as they had orange on and he said wasn't any brush around just shade from dock. got me thinking of another dock in and strip pit I had permission to fish off of but had only been once as there wasn't any brush around it.
So as I had only two fish there headed out to a access road would take me to this place off beaten path. Hit the dock and on first drop KABOOM nice 11 incher. Second drop with jig and minnow KABOOM 10 inches. Third KABOOM another one. started dipping all around and strange thing is pit is way down and only 3 or 4 FOW! Went all around the swimming platform but it was along gangplank where shallowest and right where it came in caught the most. It was all about the shade around the dock as it was sunny where I caught fish after fish in different books and shooting under the docks as well. Incredible KABOOM event and in hour or so had 23 there. New honey hole when sun shining. Owner had told me he kills them at times there. He had nice private lake at his residence where buddy charlie took me fishing last spring, we caught just a few sunfish but in talking to him he told me about this dock which isn't far from my cabin and said go ahead and fish it. Always nice to talk to folks and ask permission.
Ended up cleaning the 25 and when I was done my boys had them in grease in about an hour and cooked the whole 50 filets. this crew loves them some fried crappie. They wern't seeing many deer but one guy had hit a nice buck but main target area blocked by tree he hit him right in guts. followed too quickly as it was about dark instead of letting him lie down and bleed out. Ended up pushing him couple times. Still teaching them how to do things right.

WE do eat very well at camp with first community feast and then crappie fry. Plus they bought a gallon of the fabulous Soup for the second weekend as well. Plus wife of one made a great breakfast casserole so we get a quick start in mornings.
Life is good! Don't have to clean any deer I get and the boys usually clean the fish. I just play host and go fishing most of time plus visiting with folks in town and on docks.
I rather be fishing, and I'd rather eat fish. But at least you seen the deer. An excellent report and good pics!
